Three Test Wells Seek Upper Pinellas Water CLEARWATER-The main test wells have been completed on the C. A. Peterson, director of Pinellas terday.

Testing will continue until water deposits are definitely determined. Pinellas is trying to locate a new water source to service communities above Largo. The three wells have been sunk on the Boyd Estate to determine if sufficient water exists there to warrant permanent drilling. Here is the way the three proposition works: All wells are situated in a straight line. One observation well is 30 feet from the main test well, and the other observation well is some 1,000 feet distant.

Water is pumped from the main test well for a given period of time. During this time the water line in the main test well is observed. If it sinks 10 feet, a check is made of the nearest observation well to determine the sinking of its water line. Generally, the first observation well will show a decrease in water line commensurate with the main test well. This means water from both wells is being pumped water well and two observation Boyd Estate in Upper Pinellas, County public works, said yes- from the same source.

The telling test comes when the second observation well, some 1,000 feet away, is checked. If its water has sunk to a comparative level with observation well No. 1 and the main test well, two conclusions are drawn: (1) A test well cannot be drilled in the general vicinity of observation well No. 2, because water from all three wells comes from the same source. (2) It also indicates the source for all three wells is a large one and worthy of investigation.

This trial and error method, utilized by the County, precludes big expenditures on well equipment until the location of needed water sources is definitely established. Pinellas County has been looking for a new source of water for Upper Pinellas for two years. Reports of water experts indicate that present sources in this area are diminishing rapidly.
